10:00-11:15: panel “Women’s Work” I: Value, Domesticity, and Textiles (Millie Creighton, Sooa Im McCormick, Medha Bhatt)

Artistic practices historically the purview of women, such as textile/ garment production, are often pejoratively cast as “crafts” and ascribed lower value in the art market and other institutions. Presenters in this panel examine the status, commodification, and performative labor of the production of women’s regional textile traditions.   

11:15-12:10: panelWomen’s Work” II: Labor, Gender, Critique (Melia Belli Bose, Kim Na-Jung)

This panel examines examples of artists who incorporate regional textiles in their work to critique gender imbalances and other social constructs within the cultures.

12:10- 1:00: Lunch at the gallery for participants

1:00-3:00: Textile-based performance by Monica Jahan Bose Shuishuta (Needle & Thread): a participatory performance/installation

3:00-3:20: Yolonda Skelton discusses her students’ collaborative exhibition at the Legacy, Urban Regalia Westshore Stories, displaying the students’ button blanket robes that are inspired by Canadian Northwest Coast indigenous regalia

3:20-4:00: Concluding remarks by Christine Guth.
